Maspalomas is the oldest resort on the south coast of Gran Canaria and is known for its huge dunes, which are six kilometers long and one to two kilometers wide. The dunes are the only official nudist area in Gran Canaria. The 68 meter high lighthouse El Faro, which was built in 1889, towers proudly into the air. At the lighthouse there is an oasis called "La Charca" where numerous waterfowl breed. Like the dunes, it has been under nature protection since 1987. It is just 15 minutes by car to the most beautiful beaches of Maspalomas, Amadores and Puerto Rico or to Playa del Inglés.
